Description

The Kiwi Rowi is currently only found in a small area of lowland forest from Okarito to South Westland and a few small offshore islands that are used as 'creches'. Its conservation status is nationally endangered with a total current national population of apx 500x, up from the 1995 population of apx 160x. The Kiwi Rowi is under close DOC management (mainly within the Okarito Sanctuary) with an aim of over 3.9% population increase every year. This is mainly due to the success of 'Operation Nest Egg' and the heavily managed program is regarded as saving the Kiwi Rowi from extinction.

The Kiwi chick of the Kiwi Rowi stays with the parents for 4-5 years, sharing their barrow and helping to raise their younger siblings. This is different to the Brown Kiwi, where the kiwi chicks and completely independent from apx 2 months.

The Kiwi was voted New Zealand Bird of the Year in 2009. However the win was for the overall 'kiwi tribe' not the Kiwi Rowi. Voting is in apx October/November every year and is always an exciting and heavily competed contest.

The original Kiwi Rowi sparkly decoration was introduced in 2019.

This decoration is made of fabric, sequins, beads and coloured metallic threads. It is nice and light for posting. If you need to send them internationally we can do it for you. Handy information - The cost to send up to 10x NZ Bird sparkly decorations to the same international address is the same as sending 1x.
