Description
The Pohowera conservation status is nationally critical and in serious decline. Although the Pohowera is considered endemic and only breed in New Zealand, a small number after breeding may migrate for winter to Australia, Kermedec Islands, New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Fiji. It is estimated there is currently apx 18,000 Pohowera and is declining rapidly annually, as 10 years ago the estimated population was 50,000.It was on one of the Pohowera holidays to New South Wales that they were first recorded by Edgar Stead in 1827. Once Pohowera were found throughout New Zealand but recently they are no longer found in a huge number of their usual breeding and/or foraging sites. An intensive study in the Kaikoura area showed that one year there was a heart wrenching 97% failure rate when nesting. Relentless studying shows that the main cause for this population's poor breeding rate was predation from cats, both feral and domestic. Although hedgehogs, stoats, rats and people do also play a small part in the low breeding rates.
The Pohowera has never won the New Zealand Bird of the Year competition. Maybe now is a perfect year to bring attention to the plight of the Pohowera. It just takes one person to be a campaign manager for the Pohowera and it's a great opportunity to develop valuable marketing and managing skills. Voting is in apx October/November every year and is always an exciting and heavily competed contest.
