Description
This Torea Tai sparkly decoration was redesigned in 2023.A long lived (up to 30 years) coastal bird that is often highly aggressive towards people when it is protecting it's nest and chicks. In the 1970's it is estimated only 2000 Variable Oystercatcher's / Torea Tai remained. It has since increased in population to apx 5000. Adult Torea Tai survival rate is high however predation of eggs and chicks, flooding of nests, disturbance of nest by human recreational activities are cause of a low breeding success. The Torea Tai that breed within the protection programs for Dotterels / Tuturiwhatu and Fairy Tern / Tara Iti have outstanding breeding success.
The Torea Tai has never won bird of the year. Voting is in apx October/November every year and is always an exciting and heavily competed contest.
The Torea Tai sparkly decoration was originally introduced in 2019.
This decoration is made of fabric, sequins, beads and coloured metallic threads. It is nice and light for posting. If you need to send them internationally we can do it for you.
