Description
The Kaka-wairiki although only found in small numbers in limited area's around NZ, is the most abundant of NZ endemic parakeets.Kakariki use to fly in large flocks and often caused havoc in early settler's orchids and grain fields. Currently they are considered an 'at risk' endemic bird. This is mainly due to introduced pests, however in the1880's large flocks were shot by settlers. The Kaka-wairiki was bold and didn't startle or fly away from loud noise / gunshot (unlike the rare, cryptic and quite natured orange-fronted parakeet / Kakariki Karaka) Currently the Kaka-wairiki population is concentrated mainly in pest free areas around the country, although there has been great progress with the Kaka-wairiki dispersing from Zealandia into the Wellington region.
There is a mountain in the lower North Island name Paekakariki. This area in the Kapiti region, was one of the most populated regions of the Kakariki prior to introduced predators.
The Kakariki won Bird of the Year in 2010. Voting is in apx October/November every year and is always an exciting and heavily competed contest.
The Kaka-wairiki sparkly decoration was introduced in 2018. This decoration depicts the Red-Crowned Parakeet / Kaka-wairiki. The nationally critical endemic Orange-Fronted Parakeet / Kakariki Karaka will have its own sparkly decoration being introduced in 2023.
This decoration is made of fabric, sequins, beads and coloured metallic threads. It is nice and light for posting. If you need to send them internationally we can do it for you. Handy information - The cost to send up to 10x NZ Bird sparkly decorations to the same international address is the same as sending 1x.
