With apx 40 birds left in the world, but fewer than a dozen breeding pairs, the Tara iti is struggling to survive. The tiny population in their breeding season is heavily managed. The dainty coastal bird is threatened due to introduced predators and disturbance or encroachment by humans. All breeding sites of the Tara Iti are increasingly popular popular human recreational destinations. Recreational activities (eg Kite Surfing, motor biking) reducing the area of undisturbed coastal waters available for fairy tern foraging and breeding.The Tara Iti won the New Zealand Bird of the Year in 2014. Voting is in apx October/November every year and is always an exciting and heavily competed contest.
The Tara Iti sparkly decoration was introduced in 2021.
