12x8cm. Often referred to as 'Pook'
New Zealand, Hanging Birds, Hanging NZ Sparkly Decorations
DescriptionThe Pukeko often live in permanent social groups and multiple pooks lay their eggs in one nest and raise the chicks as a group. The Pukeko could possibly have the most interesting and complex social systems of any bird species in the world.
The Pukeko are not indigenous to New Zealand, it is thought the Pukeko flew and/or was blown across in a storm from Australia apx 1000 years ago. Known elsewhere in the world as swaphens, the New Zealand subspecies is the same as in the Kermadecs, Australia and the South West Pacific. Other subspecies are found in Africa, Western Mediterranean, Asia, Polynesia and the Philippines.
The Pukeko was New Zealand Bird of the Year in 2011. Voting is in apx October/November every year and is always an exciting and heavily competed contest.
The Pukeko with flowers decoration was introduced in 2023. It replaces the Pukeko sparkly decoration (with feet) that was introduced in 2020. Which replaced the Pukeko (standing in a swap) originally designed in 2018.
This decoration is made of fabric, sequins, beads and coloured metallic threads. It is nice and light for posting. If you need to send them internationally we can do it for you. Handy information - The cost to send up to 10x NZ Bird sparkly decorations to the same international address is the same as sending 1x.
